Satellite images experiment

Unread post by javildesign » Tue Mar 17, 2020 7:35 pm

Hi all!

Sometimes I need to distance myself from a current project to gain more creativity and then I like to experiment with some nice ideas I have in stock. This time I wanted to use a satellite image to create a track.

The whole idea is to create a track from real existing roads. Or gritty and dirty forest roads. And I don't want to spent too much time on modeling and texturing. One day track building I wanted to call it. I think a day is maybe too ambitious, but maybe only modeling in a day could be done. I did some tests and I'm very happy with the result. Modeling only took one hour. Then I baked the ambient lighting, positioned the skybox to match the sunlight and voilà.

I did not use any elevation map data, which could help to determine how high certain area's are. But I don't want that for this project because the satellite images that I found interesting to build on, are completely flat by terrain. So I had to find a way to create my own random elevation terrain.

This video below shows my progress so far. This is a completely non-optimized texture. I think I can make progress in precise image-editing.

Hey, that's interesting! I don't think it looks great, but if possible, it could be cool to race through places you know (but with a huge car :P).

Thanks 607!

I have an update on this "experiment" track.
This week I tried to add some elements to the track. Like tires, billboards, fences and guardrails etc.

Further I'm looking for a good name for this track.
I searched the surroundings of this area on google-maps for a good name but find it difficult to choose.
Here are some options, which one do you like the most? Or does anyone have another idea?
  • Topsey
  • Pidcoke
  • Antelope
  • Antelope crossing
  • Table Rock
  • Shell Mountain Road
  • Turkey Run

On the discord channel I ask if people like to send in a flag design, so I will ask it here also.
I have some room left for custom designs, so if anyone like to contribute..?
You can pm me any question related to that, or send the design to my email or discord.

None of the names seem very good, to be honest. At the same time, I think any would be okay, although I think 'Topsy' and 'Turkey Run' would give rise to ideas about the track that are untrue.

Yeah, I don't like them so much either.. These names are in the surrounding area of that map. I like the idea to stick to the original or close to the original area. But maybe that's not a good idea. I will try to think of some new names.

Very cool project. Other than 607 I think this looks really great. It has a very special athmosphere, and I think this sort of track could work well as a Re-Volt track. I really like the name Antelope Crossing, by the way. Keep it up, really looking forward to this.

Thanks all for your input!

I finished the work on AI today, a will begin working on the tracks-zones soon.

I'm have two names left. Kiwi and Durtvan Ludwig vote for Antelope Crossing. But I have a new track name: Wildland.
Are there more people who like to share their opinion?

Wildland is cool because it's easier to read and keeps the track more open to imagination

Hi all!

I'm close to finishing my satellite map track. I busy with some music for it.
Also I need to add some sounds to the track, so I need some time to do that.

Image
I added some rocks, fine tuned the map, ncp optimization, trackzones, AI and PosNodes.

This weekend I was busy doing cameraNodes. That was a challenge. It is still not like I wanted, but still cool.
Reverse is also done, so this will be directly available when launched.

It will not fit revoltzone, because of the textures.

The only thing I created in an hour is the modeling. Everything else took me quite a while, contrary to my expectations ;)
Hope to release it soon!

I'm glad you put more time into this than expected, as it's looking great! :D This would be worth playing just for how unique it is, but if it's actually good, that's of course a lot better.

Hi all! Still working on the sounds, but I finished the music track.
Although this tracks ask for some guitars, I only can make trance/techno styled music (at least, I try ;) ).

I have uploaded a 3 lap race. Hope to release the track next week.

This is really impressive. I‘m glad you put more effort into this track than you have planned in the beginning. I think this track show perfectly what is possible if you don‘t think too narrow minded and experiment with the possibilities RVGL gives you. Great job as always, Jan.

Thanks Kiwi!

Good news, the track is 99,9% finished..
..but because of the upcoming of a new release version with new possibilities, I decided to postpone the release.
The new release will be getting the possibility to add custom sounds for while driving on materials.

So I dove in to my sounds library and created some cool dirt/sand sounds.
Those are almost ready and need to be added to the project.
Further I added wind sound effects, which I recorded earlier this week (was very windy here, so I had luck).

What I worked on this week:

  • I added some banners over the guarding rails and fixed some minor issues.
  • I added split time objects (+R) for time-trails. (little top painted yellow poles are the visual representation of that)
  • Added sand/dirt and smoke trails

Some in-game screenshots

Release will be somewhere in May.. stay tuned...

Say, have you considered using software that can upscale those textures? I remember someone over on Discord was doing that with A.I. Gigapixel, although that's a commercial product. However, the person in question linked this guide, which shows a few other options. In this particular case, ESRGAN might be the best free option.

Other than the textures, the track's really looking fantastic. Great work so far!

Cool, thank you URV!

I tried it, and got mixed results. I will try and get better results tomorrow.
But.. I did get some improvement, seen in the video below.

Ok so I did a re-paint of the main map to loose the low detail of the satellite image.
It was a lot of work in Blender and Substance, but I like the result.

I also recorded some soundFX and added them in to the properties.txt.
Wind (as force field) is also added and I'm busy to add stuff in that will fly all over the place.

Unless your house is gigantic and does not feature a roof, I doubt that a tutorial for the process of using satellite images for RV tracks would get you far with that dream. :P
